DREAMS AND CHOICE

3rd day of my personal English Diary. I didn’t realize how I missed writing some kind of diary like that which reminds me of my old blue diary that I Had when I was a teenager. In that where I wrote all my sexual experience but, moreover, where I wrote one year of my first love affair.

I don’t remember if my curiosity of psychology was still alive during that year. Maybe that feeling kept me all my thoughts, even though that kind of experience, changed all my idea of a love relation especially with regards to jealousy and possessiveness.

But that cannot be the subject of my everyday script.

Let’s talk about the first movie of which, for the first time in my life, I took note of what an actor said to study it: Vanilla Sky. (My English is getting better every day. My usually work on mistakes are decreasing day by day).

The dream and the choice

Firstly, the thing that comes to mind is the surprising feeling that I had when, in the last part of the movie, I realized how a dream can seem real and how can people that we know when we are awake can play completely different roles or behave in our dreams. This was very impressive to me at that age.

Secondly the, thing that comes to mind is the phrase of one character, the helper: “Choice, David”, which allows the viewer imagine the rest of the phrase “that changes everything”. And I want to add “also your present”. That impressed me a lot.

In conclusion, not so psychological fact but so cute, was the full quotes in the movie to the past, to mum’s love and to friendship all surrounded by lots of autumn leaves and old musics.

Not as interesting as the others…right? However, this is one of the movie I see the most in my life, at least than 30 times. I can take advantage of that situation adding another movie to this article so I can write a little more and practice English.

Shutter Island

I really loved that movie because of the psychiatric context in which the characters interpreted by Di Caprio and Ruffalo worked on in this amazing Scorsese movie.

Firstly, In this movie we still talk about hallucinations. However, in this kind of schizophrenic disorder the delusions and hallucinations arise from two traumatic events: WW2 and the murder of Di Caprio’s children by his wife (interpreted by Michelle Williams). The hallucinations here help Leddies, the main character, erase memories and let soul live without guilt for letting his wife do what she did.

In this movie Ted Levine, who played Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs, in one scene, talked to Leddies regarding violence and human nature. This is one of my favorite shots ever.

But the most important thing that I loved regarding this movie is that, like in A Beautiful Mind, the protagonist, under supervision and help of the head of the psychiatric hospital interpreted by Ben Kingsley, can choose to treat his disorder without psychiatric drugs. The alternative, unlike A Beautiful Mind, isn’t medications but lobotomy. In fact, the movie is set in 1954 when lobotomy was still a way to “treat” schizophrenic disorder.

Conclusion

These two movies have supported a lot of my psychological curiosity, and I think that with these I end up with the most important psychological movie of my life. Other movies l really liked and impressed me, like Se7en, Fight Club, The Stanford Experiment and Interstate 60. In fact, what I’m going to do is continue this diary-journey daily script to practice English and at the same time to talk about me.
